  • HEAL, DON'T HURT MOMMA! 
    EXERCISE TREATMENT IN THE WOMEN'S HEALTH ENVIRONMENT

    A two-day continuing education course has been developed by Pamela A. Downey, MSPT, DPT, to demystify working with the pregnant client and to give clear, evidence-based treatment approaches for women with different types of musculoskeletal dysfunctions. This course is appropriate for Physical Therapists and Pilates Instructors and is intermediate in nature. A sound knowledge base is required in therapeutic exercise, Pilates and basic anatomy. More advanced discussions will be introduced based on the level of the class. 

    Objectives: At the completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

    1. Use a uniform vocabulary that describes the events and changes that a woman experiences during the childbearing year.
  • 2. Better integrate the anatomy of the pelvic floor musculature, trunk and diaphragm in therapeutic exercise.
  • 3. Identify postural and musculoskeletal changes in the pregnant client and their impact on health and wellness.
  • 4. Synthesize exercise modifications and precautions for women in the physical therapy and Pilates environment.
  • 5. Develop a framework to create Pilates exercise classes for patients/clients that are pregnant or with history of pelvic pain and/or pelvic floor dysfunction. 
  • 6. Become more comfortable in screening clients or patients with a history of pelvic pain, incontinence, diastasis recti and/or abdominal surgery.
  • 7. Understand the impact of pelvic floor dysfunction and chronic pelvic pain diagnoses in the women?s quality of life.
  • 8. Complete case studies and exercise selection utilizing a diagnosis of pelvic floor dysfunction and a client who is pregnant.

 

Duration: 16 hours (2 days)Pre-requisities: This course is open to physical therapists and fitness instructors that have completed (with certification) a recognized Pilates Program and have at least 6 months of exposure working with clients needing movement work. It is expected that participants will have basic knowledge of therapeutic exercise including Pilates exercises for mat and studio equipment (Trapeze Table, Reformer, Chair, Ladder Barrel).

Polestar Pilates - Dancer/Gymnasts

Pilates for the Dancer and Gymnast addresses the needs of dancers and gymnasts from a Pilates perspective. The course includes special labs to facilitate strength, flexibility, coordination, and technique specific to the performers’ needs. Further, the course covers techniques for performance enhancement, injury prevention and rehabilitation of the dancer and gymnast.

Duration:16 hours (2 days)

Pre-requisities: completion of a comprehensice certification in Pilates from a Pilates Alliance approved school (including Polestar Pilates Studio or Polestar Pilates for Rehabilitation). What is neutral spine and how do I find this for myself and my clients? This practical workshop is for PIlates and movement teachers, using Aston approach to assess posture and the application of the neutral spine position for an individual to optimse freedom of movement and control.

    Polestar Pilates -Teaching Program 2010 

The Polestar Pilates teacher programs teach movement analysis, group dynamics, and modifications for the low to moderate risk clients. The Polestar Fitness Screening and critical reasoning skills provide a solid infrastructure to assess and design custom Pilates programs. Students learn tactile skills, advanced body awareness and imagery for clear cueing.

In addition, the Polestar Pilates for Rehabilitation curriculum helps practitioners identify the best path of care as well as the holistic implementation of pilates for moderate to high risk clients.
